André Deutsch - Biography

André Deutsch (15 November 1917 Budapest, Hungary – 11 April 2000) was a British publisher.

After having learned the business of publishing working for Francis Aldor (Aldor Publications, London) with whom he was interned in the Isle of Man during the Second World War and who had introduced him to the industry, André Deutsch left Aldor's employment after a few months to continue his burgeoning publishing career with the firm of Nicholson & Watson. After the War he started his first company Allan Wingate which survived for five years. André Deutsch Limited started trading in 1952.

His small but influential publishing house ran until the 1980s, and included books by Jack Kerouac, Earl Lovelace, Norman Mailer, George Mikes, V. S. Naipaul, Ogden Nash, Andrew Robinson, Philip Roth, Art Spiegelman, John Updike, Margaret Atwood, Charles Gidley Wheeler and Helene Hanff, and is now an imprint of Carlton Publishing Group. Deutsch employed dedicated editor Diana Athill.

Deutsch died on 11 April 2000, aged 82. His company is now an imprint of Carlton Publishing Group.
