Edward Feigenbaum - Biography

Edward Albert Feigenbaum (born January 20, 1936; Weehawken, New Jersey) is a computer scientist working in the field of artificial intelligence. He is often called the "father of expert systems."

Feigenbaum completed his undergraduate degree (1956), and a Ph.D. (1960), at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). In his Ph.D thesis, carried out under the supervision of Herbert Simon, he developed EPAM, one of the first computer models of how people learn.

He received the ACM Turing Award, the most prestigious award in computer science, jointly with Raj Reddy in 1994 "For pioneering the design and construction of large scale artificial intelligence systems, demonstrating the practical importance and potential commercial impact of artificial intelligence technology". A former chief scientist of the Air Force, he received the U.S. Air Force Exceptional Civilian Service Award in 1997. In 1984 he was selected as one the initial fellows of the ACMI and in 2007 was inducted as a Fellow of the ACM. In 2011, Feigenbaum was inducted into IEEE Intelligent Systems' AI's Hall of Fame for the "significant contributions to the field of AI and intelligent systems".

He founded the Knowledge Systems Laboratory at Stanford University. He is currently a Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at Stanford University.

He was co-founder of several start-ups, such as IntelliCorp and Teknowledge.
