Samuel Orgelbrand - Biography

Samuel Orgelbrand (1810-1868) was one of the most prominent Polish-Jewish printers and publishers of the 19th century. The person to discover the works of Józef Ignacy Kraszewski.

The monumental work - publishing the encyclopedia

In period of 1859-1868 he was also the initiator, organizer and publisher of the "Encyklopedia Powszechna" authored by team of 181 Polish scientists (see: ), the first true modern Polish language encyclopedia (example volume: "Encyklopedyja powszechna", vol. 20).

The work was continued by his sons.

Biography

Samuel Orgelbrand was born in 1810 in Warsaw. In 1829 he published his first book, a translation of a work by Thomas Campbell. In 1836 he opened his bookstore. In 1840, a library.
