После 1918 года он стал одним из ответственных работников Главнауки, руководил научными и художественными учреждениями Ленинграда, с 1926 года работал в Публичной библиотеке. Подвергался преследованиям властей, в основном за свои родственные связи с Иосифом Владимировичем Гессеном, который доводился ему троюродным братом, умер во время блокады Ленинграда.
