Первый еврей, учившийся в Московском, а затем в Петербургском университете и закончивший его в 1844 году. В 1846 году Л.Мандельштам был назначен "ученым евреем" при министерстве народного просвещения с целью руководить созданием в "черте оседлости" казенных еврейских школ. Леон Мандельштам - автор ряда пособий, словарей, художественных книг. Издал в Берлине на рус. языке свой перевод Тору (1862) и Псалтирь (1871).
