Михаил принял участие в народовольческом движении, был арестован и отправлен на каторгу. По отбытии положенного срока эмигрировал в Швейцарию. Приняв участие в создании партии эсеров, он вплоть до своей смерти был одним из ее лидеров. умер в 1906 г. умер в Берлине после удаления опухоли на позвоночнике возникшей в результате удара прикладом солдатской винтовки, и во время «усмирения» вооружённого выступления 33-х политических ссыльных в 1884 г. («Якутская трагедия»). Похоронен в Женеве.
