Талантливый драматический актёр и педагог, работал со Станиславским, Немировичем-Данченко, Вахтанговым и Мейерхольдом, выступая под сценическим псевдонимом Азарий Азарин. Художественный руководитель Театра Ермоловой. Азарий умер от разрыва сердца в 1937 году, тяжело пережив закрытие второго МХАТа, где он работал, и арест отца Майи Плисецкой - Михаила Плисецкого.
