Яков (Жак) воспитывался в Швейцарии (Женева и Лозанна), и Шестов в 1912–1914 гг. следил за его обучением. Около 1920 г. Яша уехал из Швейцарии. 1 августа 1920 г. из Шанхая уехал в Америку в Сиэтл. А потом в Сан-Франциско, где остался жить, переменив фамилию (Jacques Bergues).
