Мордехай по прозвищу Зундельс, или Литовский, жил в середине XVIIIв. в Волковышках(Вилкавишкис), был известен как талмудист и благочестивый человек (Mordche der grosser). 12-летним мальчиком во время польской конфедерации он был похищен у своего отца,Иосифа (в Плунгянах) и перевезен в Волковышки, был выкуплен из плена Ханохом-Зунделем, выдавшим за него свою дочь. Этот Мордехай, ставший таким образом Зундельсом, отличался незаурядными способностями и познаниями, его святость и ученость отражены в многочисленных легендах.
