Окончил Киевское музыкальное училище и Московскую консерваторию (по классу А. Н. Скрябина), после окончания которой работал в Харьковском музыкальном училище, а с 1917 года — в Харьковской консерватории. Именно дядя Александр Горовиц, один из любимых учеников Скрябина, оказал большое влияние на будущее Владимира и благодаря ему племянник встретился со Скрябиным в 1914 году.
