Переселившись в Москву в январе 1923 года, работал в периодике, писал фельетоны и очерки. Через пять лет Илья Ильф и Евгений Петров прославились как авторы романа «Двенадцать стульев», а затем – «Золотого теленка» (1931). Их перу принадлежит множество рассказов, фельетонов, сценариев и книга путевых очерков «Одноэтажная Америка». Кроме того, Ильф оказался тонким поэтом-фотографом. Он умер от туберкулеза в 1937 году.
