Советский и российский актёр театра, кино и дубляжа. Народный артист СССР (1976). Лауреат Государственной премии РСФСР имени К. С. Станиславского (1970), Государственной премии СССР (1979), Государственной премии России (1995) и Премии президента России (2004). Был одним из самых популярных актёров Советского Союза, исполнителем более ста ролей в театре и кино. Мастер как комедийного («Гусарская баллада», «Иван Васильевич меняет профессию», «Ирония судьбы, или С лёгким паром!», «Кин-дза-дза»), так и драматического («Идиот», «Опасный поворот», «Любовь земная») жанров. Был ведущим артистом Театра имени Е. Вахтангова периода его расцвета.
