Выделялся с раннего возраста в изучении и преподавании Торы, но не захотел становится профессиональным раввином. После смерти отца, получил просьбу заместить того в Иерусалиме. Лишь через 10 лет после получения просьбы (около 1907 года) совершил алию и возглавил приют для сирот, приняв также другие общинные обязанности.
