Chicago, Illinois -- 28 January 1993 (obituary): Leo Gershanov, 100, CEO for many years of Frederick Cooper Lamps and Tyndale Lamps, had a life full of adventure, danger and accomplishment. Mr. Gershanov, a resident of the Near North Side, died Tuesday in his home. He was born in Russia and served in the Army there under the czar. During World War I, he was captured by the Hungarian Army, but escaped by leaping from a railroad car. Mr. Gershanov settled in Czechoslovakia, where he started what became the largest winery in the country. In the late 1930s, just before the Nazis marched into the country, he left for London, where he lived through the air raids during the Battle of Britain. In 1942, he came to the U.S. and subsequently to Chicago. Survivors include two sons, Fred and Peter; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
