Происхождение фамилии


The family name Hellman belongs to a very wide spread group of the Jewish names – the patronymic names that are formed on the basis of a male personal name. Usually this was a name of either the father or a grandfather of the family that was the first to receive the name. Thus apparently a person with the name Hellman is the forefather of the clan.

The name appeared in Germany and its meaning is “man from a deep, wild glen”.

The name is quite rare and one can assert with almost complete certitude that all people with this name are descendants of one common ancestor. Probably the most famous representative of this clan is the Laureate of Nobel Prize in Physics of 1969 Prof. Murray Gell-Mann. The hyphen in the family name appeared as a result of the migrations of the family, while originally the name was either Gellman or Hellman. The latter together with Helman are different spelling variations of the same family name.
