Она была очень дружна с дочерью неаполитанского вице-короля Леонорою, впоследствии герцогинею Тосканскою, женою Козьмы II Медичи, и благотворно влияла на ее воспитание. Дом Самуила и Бенвениды в Неаполе был сборным пунктом для еврейских и христианских ученых. Там вел свои беседы по Талмуду Давид б.-Яхья, бежавший из страны инквизиции, Португалии, и занявший пост раввина в Неаполе благодаря поддержке А. Там читал лекции о Каббале мистик Барух из Беневенто, которого приходили слушать и христианские ученые (Видманштадт, ученик Рейхлина и др.). Самуил и Бенвенида А. всегда заступались пред властями за своих соплеменников в моменты опасности. Когда император Карл V во время пребывания в Италии приказал изгнать евреев из Неаполя, Бенвенида вместе со своей молодой подругой, принцессой Леонорой, так горячо упрашивала его об отмене этого распоряжения, что император должен был уступить. Но чете А. удалось отсрочить выселение лишь на несколько лет: в 1540 г. снова последовал императорский приказ о выселении евреев из Неаполя. Семье А. разрешили, в виде исключения, остаться в городе; но она захотела разделить участь всех изгнанных братьев — и переселилась в Феррару. second wife, Benvenida Abravanela, a woman of prudence, culture, grace, piety, and charity, nobly seconded his efforts. The viceroy of Naples permitted his daughter Leonora, later grand duchess of Tuscany, to be on friendly terms with Benvenida and even to become her pupil. Leonora looked up to her with filial love and respect. When Charles V. issued an edict to expel the Jews from Naples, Benvenida, with the assistance of Leonora, intervened in their behalf so effectively that the decree was revoked. But several years later, when Charles V. ordered the Jews either to leave the land or to wear the badge, the Abravanels settled in Ferrara, where Samuel died in 1551, and Benvenida three years later.
